Many people out there are avid gardeners? Question is how do you do it while living on the road, or even if your stationary but living in your RV? Here are some ideas that you can use to keep your gardening skills up to par but still be able to take it with you when you move and travel.
First idea I am going to give you is what I did myself.
Ok. So I got this idea from something I had seen on Pinterest with growing a flower or garden in a pallet. I got a few flowers from a neighbor and I bought my seeds. My husband brought a pallet home from work. I cleaned it up and dumped the soil in after putting boards on the underneath side to keep the soil inside. I was hoping it would look as good as the Pinterest photo I had seen. Well unfortunately that idea didn’t plan out. So onto idea number 2.
I got tired of trying to have the plants grow from seeds (I’m a pretty impatient person) so I went out to Home Depot and bought plants that were already grown and transplanted them into the pallet garden. I also bought a tomato plant to put in a pot I had been given. I kept the pallet in the front of the RV where it could get a lot of sunlight. Well they weren’t growing as well as I had hoped in the pallet so I went on to idea number 3.
My final attempt at growing a garden was to take apart the pallet. I got permission from the landlord to plant right into the ground at the end of our RV. I moved the tomato plant over as well. And the herbs took off. I had also gotten strawberries but they were a one time bloom type so I only wound up getting a few from those plants. I enjoyed my herbs though.
So this is an idea if you are in one place and get permission to grow right next to your RV. Sadly when we moved I had to disassemble the garden and since then I have had the bad luck of a black thumb not even being able to grow cat grass. LOL
Moving on to ideas if you are mobile. There are several wonderful ideas that are available and would work perfectly in a full time mobile RV living situation.
If you are looking for compact and something to grow inside, maybe due to bad weather? But your still craving those yummy fresh herbs? Give one of these options a try.
This idea is something I came across while searching Pinterest. I even made a board with all the herbs I wanted to get for it. It’s called an Aerogarden and you can buy it on Amazon. It comes in several different sizes depending on what kind of space you have available. I was going to go with the smallest version and put it on my kitchen counter.
Only thing I didn’t like about it was the direction it faced. Meaning it would be sticking out from the wall instead of being something flush against the wall. But this was only the case for the smaller version I was interested in. I wasn’t loving the colors either. It comes in many colors and sizes as well. Just not the style I would like for my rig.
The second type of device like this I came across while watching Shark Tank. I loved the way it looked so it was aesthetically pleasing to the eye. It’s called the edn garden. They had larger ideas that could be mounted in a home on the wall they showed on the show as well. But I immediately looked it up and really loved the idea. It is a bit more expensive than the different options that the Aerogarden provides but if your looking for something that looks nice as well as being small and works well then this is it!
I found several other ideas of having indoor gardens. One was from Vegan Voyagers. They simply used hanging bars, hooks and Fintorp condiment and utensil containers from Ikea. I really adore where they put their inside plants hanging in the spot the TV would normally be. Genius!
You can also have a tin can herb garden somewhere in your rig, maybe on the dining table near the window? The website Life’s a Party came up with this idea below. I think with some string and a curtain rod you could hang these from the window some way or put up a shelf to place them on. I like this style because it’s functional and cute too! I like simple.
If your looking for something that you can keep outside that is also mobile there are several options for you as well.
There is this planter you can purchase from Amazon. It would be easily portable and you could keep it outside when you are all setup in your spot.
Although this option is MUCH more expensive for the initial setup it still gives you an option if you are a TRUE gardener and can’t stand the idea of leaving your greenery hobby behind when you move.
It’s called the Tower Garden and can be purchased online on their website. You can grow up to 20 different plants in this contraption which I think it pretty cool. Although this is the first ever idea I found online that could work with gardening while on the road it does have a monthly fee which can get expensive, $45.25/month. But it does come with everything you need to get started which is a plus for sure!
Do you garden while living in your RV? Leave a comment for me below if you have a neat idea I didn’t mention here. I’d love to hear about it!
